Summarize the books thesis or main argument, mention some of the evidence presented to support the thesis, and discuss the authors conclusion. (J.D. Vance)

Instruction & Requirements:
Type, 12 font, double space, 1 inch margins

Three to four pages in length

Summarize the books thesis or main argument, mention some of the evidence presented to support the thesis, and discuss the authors conclusion. This will give the reader a sense that youve read and understood the book.

Early in the review include the author, title and date of the book (perhaps add some background about the author).

What are the books strengths and weaknesses (in terms of content — does he/she know the topic? — and writing style — is the book clear, concise, fluid…etc)? Perhaps include a few short quotes to make your point?

Would you recommend this book? If so, to whom and why? If not, why?

Explain the books context (when was it written, is it timely — is it part of a genre or type of book — how does it fit in with the central debates of the day on this topic)? To do the above will require some research so search the UML Library Databases.

You are required to read two published (preferably scholarly) ( please use the uml Library database) book reviews to see what the experts in the field have to say about it. To write a balanced essay be sure to seek out one negative and one

positive review and incorporate these reviews into your own essay. Be sure to document these reviews in a References page (use APA style for citations).

Always check the books sources. Does the book rely on primary sources (such as oral history interviews, participant observation, government documents, letters…) or secondary sources (newspaper and journal articles, books…)

Try to personalize the review. What personal experiences relate to the book?

Write at least one draft, show it to our TA, me or a classmate and ask for critical comments. In addition, if you would like someone to read a draft be sure to allow enough time for that person to get back to you so you can incorporate suggestions into the final draft.
