Instruction & Requirements:
Instructions Social stratification refers to the hierarchy of privilege based on power, property, and prestige. It is the way that people are ranked in a society. All societies divide their members into different levels and groups. Traits and characteristics as well as resources can be used to divide people into groups. According the Functionalist perspective, social stratification is needed to ensure all positions, which make the society productive and profitable, are filled. People who deserve to be at the top of the hierarchy are appropriately placed. Conflict perspective views this topic from an alternate point. It is believed the people at the top of the hierarchy are in power due to the limiting of resources and knowledge for those at the bottom of the hierarchy. Those at the top are there to protect their power and resources.

The population of the world increases by 224,000 people each day (Henslin, 2011). One group of people believe that the Earth will not be able to support the rapidly growing population of the world, while other people believe the world is not producing enough people to sustain the populations. Both groups are making predictions of the future population of the world. It is difficult to dissect which theory is accurate. The written assignment will focus on overpopulation and needed resources. While the essay does allow for some opinions, the opinions/reflections must be supported by educational material. The essay should not be based solely on the students own thoughts. Discussion and application of educational material, with APA in-text citations and sources, are required for consideration of full credit.

In looking at how the world is becoming more populated and more developed in general, this also brings to light problems. As the population continues to grow, people will be filling more and more areas of the world. This is leading to more travel and more international business and relations amongst different countries. As people and business transfer to new areas, so do ideas about values, beliefs and the way of life. This process is referred to as globalization. While there are benefits to globalization, there are also draw backs, including the different power dynamics that can occur between groups. There is not equality all over the world, and as globalization spreads, some fear that inequality will too.

The film clip below looks at the growing population on the planet and what this will mean for different resources and relations in our world.

Video text:

Seven Billion is a big number. By the end of 2011 you will be one of 7 billion people living on Earth. It would take 200 years just to count 7 billion out loud. Seven billion steps would take you around the globe 133 times. In 1800 the worlds population was 1 Billion. One-hundred and thirty years later, in 1930, it was 2 billion. In 1960, it was 3 billion. In 1974, 4 billion. In 1987, 5 billion. In 1999, 6 billion. In 2045, it could be 9 billion. About every second 5 people are born, and 2 people die. In the time youve watched this video, our population has increased by 170 people. And nearly everywhere, were living longer. In 2010 the average person lived 69 years. In 1960, the average person lived 53 years. In 2008, for the first time ever, more of us lived in cities than in rural areas. A megacity means a population of more than 10 million people. In 1975, there were three megacities: Tokyo, Mexico City, and New York City. Right now, there are 21 Megacities. By 2050, 70 percent of us will be living in urban areas. But, we dont take up as much space as youd think. Standing shoulder to shoulder, all 7 Billion of us would fill the city of Los Angeles. So its not space we need; its balance. Five percent of us consume 23% of the worlds energy. Thirteen percent of us dont have clean drinking water. Thirty-eight percent of us lack adequate sanitation. Seven billion people, speaking more than 7,000 languages, living in 194 countries. Seven billion reasons to think about. National Geographic has a year-long series on global population.
